Distance Learning

These programs showcase the integration of hands-on learning with virtual, expert-led instruction. These programs will engage your students beyond traditional screen-based learning, as all programs listed are peer-reviewed and use best teaching practices.

Black Holes

K-12

Armstrong Air & Space 


Using balloons and aluminum foil students will discover how a black hole is formed and the physical concepts behind them.

Mission Nutrition

K-12

Armstrong Air & Space 


Participants learn about MyPlate and how to eat healthy. They will discover how your space environment impacts what you are able to eat. Participants can sample Astronaut Ice Cream and plan a day's meals for their mission.

Solar System Step-Out

K-12

Participants journey through their space neighborhood. They will learn how far the planets in our solar system are from the Sun and facts about each planet in an interactive presentation from our educator.

Journey Through the Stars

K-12

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery 

 

Join us on a journey through the stars as one of our trained astronomers takes you on a virtual trip through our Planetarium. Discover the stars and planets visible in your backyard, right now. Take a closer look at other worlds in our solar system. Zoom out into the Universe and see where we fit in the big picture. 

Standards: K.ESS.2, 5.ESS.1, 5.ESS.2 5.ESS.3, 7.ESS.4, 7.ESS.5

Format: 30 minute, theater style

Capacity: 50 Students

Rockets, Planets, and Telescopes

3rd-8th Grade

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery


Explore our place in the Solar System with hands-on experiments designed to make difficult concepts simple to understand. Students will learn to put together a basic telescope, explore how a simple rocket works, and explore the scale of our solar system using everyday objects.

Standards: 5.ESS.1, 5.ESS.3, 5.PS.1  

Format: 45-60 minute, hands-on. Materials shipped to the school.

Capacity: 30 students

Shedding Light on Solar Eclipses

K-12

Boonshoft Museum of Discovery


Our solar system is filled with motion. The Earth, Moon, and Sun are constantly on the move and changing what we observe every day. In this program, we will discover what happens when the Moon blocks the light from our Sun, and how to safely enjoy this amazing phenomenon!

Activities may vary by grade level.

Standards: K.ESS.2, 5.ESS.1, 5.ESS.2 5.ESS.3, 7.ESS.4

Gliders in Nature

WACO Air Museum


In this lesson, children will first compare common seeds that glide, and determine what physical characteristics make them good gliders, as well as why gliding is advantageous. Children will then be read The Dandelion Seed to categorize seeds within the book as gliders or non-gliders based upon their physical characteristics

Science and Social Studies with a Sled Kite

National Museum of the United States Air Force

4th-6th Grade

This class is designed to teach students the historical significance of kites (especially in regards to the Wright brothers) - and for older students, introduce them to the forces that affect flight. ​Students will identify events in the history of kites, especially in regards to the Wright brothers; learn the names of the parts of a kite; and learn about the forces that affect a kite in flight (depending on grade level).

  • Format: This class will be taught      remotely. Each student will receive a kite kit, be led through the process      of building a sled kite, and receive instructions on how to fly the kite. 
  • Standards: SS.4.8, SS.6.1, SS      6.7, PS 5.1

Math with a Sled Kite

National Museum of the United States Air Force

4th-7th Grade

This class is designed to give students practice with certain math skills while building a sled kite (thus including following directions and fine motor skills). Students will practice their knowledge of congruency, similarity, parallel lines and perpendicular lines; work as a team to calculate the perimeter and area of the sled kite; and for older students – work as a team to calculate the aspect ratio of the sled kite.

  • Format: This class will be taught      remotely. Each student will receive a kite kit, be led through the process      of building a sled kite, and receive instructions on how to fly the kite. 
  • Standards: 4.MD.3, 5.G.4, 6.G.1, 7.G.6, 6.RP.1, 6.EE.2
